Welcome to Vukovar: 10 things you shouldn’t miss during the EUSA Water Polo event

Dear EUSA Water Polo participants and guests, welcome to Vukovar, a city of resilience, culture, and unforgettable experiences! While you’re here competing and supporting your teams, take some time to explore these 10 must-see spots that capture the heart and soul of our city.
1. Vukovar Water Tower
One of Croatia’s most powerful symbols of resilience, the iconic Water Tower stands proudly with its wartime scars as a testament to Vukovar’s spirit. After its restoration, it became a memorial and observation deck with panoramic views of the Danube and the city, and will also host the EUSA Water Polo opening ceremony.
2. Eltz Manor
This stunning baroque palace along the Danube is home to the Vukovar City Museum, where you can dive into centuries of regional history and admire impressive art collections. The architecture alone is worth the visit.
3. Baroque architecture & famous “svodovi”
Wander through Vukovar’s streets and you’ll spot a rich mix of baroque buildings and the famous svodovi — arched cellar structures typical for this area. It’s an architectural journey through history. Standing proudly on Vukovar’s skyline, there is also a Church of St. Philip and St. James, one of the most important and visually striking sacral monuments. Originally built in the 18th century, it features a magnificent baroque façade, rich interior frescoes, and a peaceful monastery courtyard.
4. Vučedol Culture Museum
Located about 5 kilometers downstream from the center of Vukovar, this modern, award-winning museum is dedicated to the fascinating Vučedol culture, one of Europe’s most advanced prehistoric cultures dating back to 3000–2200 BC. The museum itself is built dramatically into the slope above the Danube, blending perfectly with the surrounding landscape. Inside, you’ll find multimedia displays, reconstructions of Vučedol houses, tools, ceramics, and the famous Vučedol Dove, a ritual vessel that has become a symbol of Croatian heritage. The museum’s engaging, high-tech exhibitions make history come alive in a truly memorable way, appealing to visitors of all ages.

5. Danube promenade & city centre
Take a relaxing stroll along the Danube promenade, with its cozy cafés, lively squares, and welcoming atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee and watch the river go by.
6. War symbols of the city
From the Memorial Cemetery to the Ovčara Memorial Centre, these sites commemorate Vukovar’s tragic but heroic past. They stand as a reminder of peace, solidarity, and the city’s journey to rebuild.
7. Ada Island
Just across the Danube, Ada Island is a true nature escape — popular for swimming, picnicking, and relaxing in the summer months. A river boat (free for ride) can take you across, and you’ll feel a world away from the city.
8. Adica forest & Adrenalin park
Need to unwind or get active after matches? The Adica forest is a local favorite for walking, running, or simply enjoying peaceful greenery. The newly built Adrenalin Park adds a dose of excitement with ropes courses and outdoor adventures.
9. House of Nobel Prize winner Lavoslav Ružička
Visit the birthplace of Lavoslav Ružička, a Nobel laureate in chemistry whose legacy continues at the Lavoslav Ružička Polytechnic, where many of you will be competing or staying nearby.
10. Where two rivers meet
Vukovar lies at the confluence of the Danube and Vuka rivers. Stand on the bridge connecting Slavonia and Srijem to see where these two rivers meet — a symbolic crossroads between regions and cultures.
Bonus spot: Borovo Naselje
This historic neighborhood is known for its industrial heritage, especially the famous Borovo shoe factory. It also features sports complexes that you’ll get to know during the tournament — adding another layer to Vukovar’s unique story.
